They include enhanced security and risk management, energy and cost savings, and centralized data management. The reasons why enterprises prefer virtualization are many. Bartering spots like /r/homelabsales or even LTT's forum have been solid - es.In this modern world, nearly 95% of businesses have turned to cloud computing.Īll their operations are carried out in the cloud or, as they say, a virtual environment. and those are OK but generally I've noticed better pricing when you can find the more fringe hole-in-the-wall types of online marketplaces.

If you were starting from a clean slate, how would you set up an office? Let's say that there are several users using local accounts on Windows laptops.

I could just set up the XP VM on the ESXi host and have him RDP into it locally when he is in the building and via a forwarded port when he is outside but he seems wedded to the idea of using Fusion. We have an XP licence for the Fusion setup on his MacBook and another licence available for a VM that could run on an ESXi host if we go that way for him. I have experimented with VPN in various ways but the data transfer is too slow for comfort - I find RDP gives a faster response because the heavy traffic is kept local within the network. We have used Logmein in the past but it is a bit slow and clunky and we find the screen display is not as clear as RDP or VNC. Hmm, either other members are not understanding my question or I am not understanding their answers. But since your user is already using Fusion on-premise, they could continue to use that VM with it's RDP client to connect via your port-forwarded access. Repeating what I said earlier, your user can get an OS X RDP client made by Microsoft that is equally capable of connecting to the same public IP address on port 3389 and connecting to the Windows machine on ESXi.

RDP does use encryption so no passwords are passed in cleartext. like a home router) as you are relying on RDP security instead of a TS Gateway or a VPN for authenticating the user. A Fusion VM running Windows could connect to this public IP address and authenticate over RDP to the OS in ESXi VM.

If you have some "client" Windows-only software installed in XP in Fusion that software can connect to any system on your network including the Windows machine running on your ESXi host.Īs you describe, outside of the building you're willing to let any PC connect to a public IP address that is port-forwarded to an RDP port (port 3389), specifically to the Windows VM running on ESXi. Ignoring licensing and focusing on the technically possible: A Fusion VM installed with Windows XP behaves like a physical PC connected to the same network as the OS X (albeit slight differences between NAT or bridged networking).
